001. it's the way you name your ship | video
[ The video feed begins and a young man stares curiously into the camera. He has the distinct look of someone who's just climbed out of their deathbed and hastily tried to make themselves look presentable -- if there is a distinct look for such a thing -- and that would be because that's exactly what he's done.
Still, despite his obvious weariness, his expression is almost cheerful. ]
L-- [ No, not Lieutenant. Not anymore. ] Archie Kennedy. Warden Kennedy, I suppose. [ He raises his hand and it sort of lingers in the air because it strikes him that he has no idea if he should be saluting or not. Do wardens salute? Do convicted mutineers?
Likely not, so he lets it drop back down to his side. ]
This Admiral, he's -- [ There's a pause as he considers his next words carefully. He can't be too forward about his opinions of this mysterious figure, not so soon after the Renown. There's no telling who could be listening. Also, first impressions and all that.] -- well. He must be an interesting fellow to command such a vessel.
Does the entire crew dress as they please? If I must report to someone to receive uniform, I'd be obliged to learn at the very least his name. The one I'm wearing hardly seems appropriate. [ It's difficult to tell by the angle of the camera but he's wearing an old-fashioned naval uniform. It doesn't strike him as the correct attire for a warden. ] Thank you.

[She makes a face, because how are you supposed to explain a computer to a guy from two hundred years in the past?]
Which is...it's sort of like a book made of plastic and metal and glass, only it holds a lot more information than it should be able to, for it's size. Also you can play games on it. And write letters. And look at dirty pictures, if you want to.
A lot of people do. Especially when they're teenagers.

Computers would be very popular in the navy. [ Mainly for the dirty pictures. And games. ] So what we're doing now isn't Skyping? What do you call it when it's not by computer?
[ He says as though he knew "Skyping" was even a thing before. ]

[ Okay yes good. He's learning things. ]
It's a wonder people ever meet in person anymore where you're from. Although, it must be convenient for dealing with undesirable company.

Like I knew a girl in my class who talked to her dad all the time when he was stationed overseas in the military. He was literally half a world away, a trip that would have taken...well I guess months using the travel you'd be used to where you come from. He was, um, like all the way where the Crusades were? But she could get on the computer and see his face and hear his voice every night.
[There's probably worse people he could be getting a primer from - for all her social dysfunction Needy's pretty smart for her age, and still fairly bookish.]

[ He knows they worry but there isn't anything to be done. It's just the way things are. ]
Facetiming and Skyping would ease their minds as well as mine. It's unfortunate that even if the people of my time could fathom the idea, we lack the means.
[ Also history would be seriously messed up if that happened but hey. ]

[ there would be mass hysteria and it would be Very Bad ]
My apologies, miss, but I don't think I have your name?

Er. Well. Given that we've only just met, would Mr. Kennedy not suffice?
[ Then again? ]
However... given the gratuitous informality our esteemed admiral has evidently come to expect of his crew, Archie is fine.
